Today you have the opportunity to choose from a variety of different décor themes and ideas, including tropical décor. But, what is tropical décor? What colors and accent pieces should be used? While tropical décor is commonly thought of as anything related to the beach true tropical décor is actually more a rich minimalistic style. This type of décor features a lot of textures and patterns that are mixed with a few simpler details as well as larger accessories.

Some of the more common motifs you will find in tropical décor include large leafy plants, palm trees, animal prints, grass cloth, leather and rattan. You will find this style most commonly used in family rooms and living rooms but you can easily use this style in master suites and other bedrooms and baths as well.

There are a few tips to keep in mind when using tropical décor. First and foremost, make sure your room is comfortable. This can be accomplished with upholstered furniture and cushions and pillows. A room with tropical décor should be calm and restful. Adding in elements such as screens, plants and artwork can offer the serenity you are seeking.

Tropical décor also usually features neutral tones such as beige, ivory, deep brown, tan, camel, pale yellow and soft gold. You can easily utilize these colors to form the foundation of a room and then add in accent colors such as shades and hues of green. Other accent colors you might consider include muted reds, black and dark brown.

In terms of size, the furniture selected for a room with tropical décor should be large in scale. Choose furniture based on utility and comfort. Look for items in iron, bamboo, wicker and rattan. Wood furniture is another great option to consider when decorating a room in tropical décor. Light woods do particularly well but you might also consider mixing things up a bit with darker shades of wood for tables.

When choosing fabrics for your room, select choices that are lush and soft. Chenniles that are in neutral solids are ideal for a tropical décor. Add in some splashes of color and excitement with pillows and accent pieces with leaf designs or jungle prints.

Remember that animal designs can prominently figure into a room with tropical décor. Animal hide designs including zebra stripes and leopard spots as well as images of lions, elephants and monkeys are all excellent choices. You can also add visual interest to a room by adding in large plants, such as palm trees. Consider placing them in the corner of the room for a more natural look.

Window coverings in a tropical décor should have a natural quality. Opt for blinds in matchstick or bamboo or something light and airy such as breezy linens. Floor should be covered in natural stones or hardwood. Accent the room with area rugs.

Following these guidelines can help you to design a room with tropical flair that you can enjoy for many years to come.
