Tropical Living in the Great Southwest

Written by
Unless you're Kenny Chesney, the tropics and southern country folk just aren't a good mix. Oh sure, we pretend they are! We visit Galveston, Texas, take the ferry to Boliver Island, all the while dodging bird poo from the flying rats we call gulls! We may even make it to South Padre Island, but usually end up in jail...thankfully in the US.

It's not that we aren't familiar with water or leisure. We have our lakes and boating areas and they're all lovely places to enjoy the water, spend some leisure time drinking and fishing and tubing...and did I mention drinking? Quality family time is vital to us southerners, you know. Nothing says quality time like being too inebriated to hear your kids when they're screaming from a tube being pulled across a lake at 40 mph.

Yet the desire to feel the trade winds blow across our faces, to smell the fresh ocean breeze, and even know what it's like to have your chin busted open, requiring twelve stitches, after having been lifted by a wave and slammed into your newlywed's forehead...now that's what we live for! Did I mention the burning from the salt water, or the fact that, with blood everywhere, your newly betrothed could leave you in the surf because all she can think of is the motion picture "Jaws?"

Truth be told, landlubbers like us southern folk, if we choose to experience the tropics would prefer a cruise where food and intoxicating drinks flow abundantly. In fact, we prefer it with Dramamine and a margarita. Beats the heck out of a ceiling fan and a subscription to a travel magazine stolen from the orthodontist's office!

Planning the Perfect Tropical Theme Wedding

Written by

Let's face it; planning a wedding is often a tricky affair. There are so many different aspects that must be taken into consideration. As a result, the entire process can feel a little overwhelming for couples. One of the basic factors to take into account is finding a wedding theme that is sure to be a big hit.

We want our guests, family and friends to really enjoy our wedding. One way to accomplish this is by adopting a wedding theme that will simultaneously be fun, inviting and memorable. While there are many themes one can choose from, it is hard to beat a tropical wedding.

A tropical wedding is fun, as everyone loves the idea of spending some time in the tropics. Further, a tropical theme wedding is relaxing as most people associate the tropics with vacation. And, of course, the tropics are warm, inviting vacation spots that most people associate with romance.

In short, there are so many reasons to pick a tropical wedding theme that it is a little surprising that we don't see tropical weddings more often. This is especially true when one considers that a tropical theme wedding allows couples and wedding planners to incorporate all kinds of wonderful tropic decorations and tropical themed drinks and food.

When you are planning a tropical wedding, start with the invitations. Tropical wedding invitations will get everyone in the right state of mind. Also tropical oriented wedding favors are a nice touch. These can be small gifts with seashells, starfish shapes or miniature tropical plants. If you can plan to have your wedding in by an ocean or lake that will further enhance the tropical mood. Of course, you will also want to select tropical flowers for your table centerpieces.

No doubt there are lots of ways that you can make your wedding memorable, but the foundation of making a great wedding is selecting the right wedding theme. For those couples considering different wedding themes, it is pretty tough to pass up a tropical wedding.

Tropical Wedding Invitations

Written by

Tropical Wedding InvitationsMany people may not realize the importance of a wedding invitation. A good invitation can accomplish several different things at the same time. Obviously, if you are sending someone an invitation to your wedding, you are hoping they will attend wedding (or at least this is the case most of the time!) Therefore, it is important to make a good first impression.

Who doesn't like blue water, clean beaches, sun, surf and those little coconut drinks with tiny umbrellas?

Through carefully selecting your wedding invitation theme, you can dramatically increase the chances that your would-be wedding guests will indeed show up on that special day. You also have the opportunity to set the mood and tone for your entire wedding. Guests will tend to base their expectations on the invitation, as this is their first impression of your wedding. While there are many options for invites, tropical wedding invitations have become increasingly popular.

Tropical wedding invitations work, in part, because virtually everyone has a positive association with the tropics. Who doesn't like blue water, clean beaches, sun, surf and those little coconut drinks with tiny umbrellas? The tropics have a great deal of fun and relaxation to offer people, and that is why so many of us dream of having a vacation in the warm and sunny tropics. Plus, the beauty of the tropics make people think about romance, which is, of course, the ideal mood to set for a wedding.

The tropical wedding invitations often incorporate tropical colors such as turquoise, green and red. Sometimes they will also have illustrations of island settings with palm trees, sun and sand. Other tropical wedding invitations feature exotic fish or birds. If you want to put your guests into a relaxed and positive state of mind, tropical wedding invitations will do the trick. Moreover, since most people find the idea of the tropics to be rather fun, your special invites will make your wedding seem fun as well.

A great many people would love to take another trip or their first trip to the tropics. However, if they can't make that trip, your wedding might be the next best thing. The bottom line is that sending your friends and family tropical wedding invitations is a great strategy to get them in the mood for your big day.

Can the Tropics Make You Healthier?

Written by

Is it possible that spending a little time in the tropics or living in the tropics might actually translate to health benefits? In other words, can a tropical life or tropical lifestyle actually improve your health and make you perhaps even live a little longer?

Computer StressNo doubt these are powerful questions, and researchers have provided us with some tantalizing answers. The first point to consider is the impact that stress can have on the human body. When your body is exposed to stress for too long of a period of time, it can become damaged due to the effects of a powerful hormone called cortisol.

Too much cortisol can result in signs of aging, such as wrinkles and even gray hair! However, the relaxation and slower pace of tropical life can reduce the amount of cortisol in the body. As a result, you will look and feel better when you are enjoying the tropics.

The sun is Vitamin-DThere is another important way that a tropical life might be able to help you live a longer, healthier life. When we spend time in the sun, our bodies use that sunlight to produce natural vitamin D. As it turns out, most of us don't receive enough sunlight and, as a result, our vitamin D levels are lacking. Unfortunately, a variety of health problems have been linked to a lack of Vitamin D, including cancer.

Living a tropical life almost guarantees that you will receive enough vitamin D. After all with beautiful beaches and lots of sunny days, why wouldn't you be enjoying the great outdoors? Just remember to bring sunscreen!

Fabulous Food for a Tropical Lifestyle

Written by

Woman wading in ocean bayLiving the tropical lifestyle means living in a bathing suit, shorts, short sleeve shirts and sandals to survive the heat. For most of your life, you may have had one notion about how to look good in your bathing suit or shorts - Limit your food intake, sweat bullets on the treadmill or in an aerobics class, eat rabbit food forever and you will lose body fat. Unfortunately, those thoughts could be the very reason why you couldn't lose weight or you gained it all back if you did lose weight.

Stop thinking about every single calorie that goes into your body and start thinking about the best way to burn calories. Once you master that, your body will know what to do to strip away fat so you can show off your new bathing suit instead of wearing shorts. One of the best ways to burn calories is to ingest good quality protein sources at every meal throughout the day. Eating mini-meals every 3 hours that include protein like chicken, fish, tuna, egg whites or whey protein powder with leafy greens, vegetables, whole grains, nuts and seeds will be the first step in losing body fat.

Cooked Fish protein

Protein does so many wonderful things in the body; it transports oxygen to your muscles and organs through the blood so you can exercise to your fullest potential.

  • protects you from illness by serving as an antibody when viruses or bacteria attack the body
  • helps the body digest food in the form of enzymes builds muscle, organs, tendons and connective tissues is critical for helping the body function at optimum levels

Protein tastes good and is probably one of the most important nutrient-dense foods that will help you lose body fat. The process your body has to go through to break down protein takes tremendous energy and creates a thermal effect or heat to do it. It takes much more effort for the body to break down protein than it does carbohydrates, so your body will automatically burn more calories throughout the day.

Muscle burns fat and when you add a weight-lifting program to your regimen, protein will help repair the muscle after your workouts. This is how you get results and successful weight loss. You will burn more calories throughout the day while ingesting less calories ending up with more fat-burning muscle. Eating protein at every meal will allow you to lose the belly fat while de-stressing you and your body.

Be sure to check out the delicious tropical meal ideas that will help you look great in your bathing suit or shorts!

Get Fit for the Tropics

Written by

A friend of mine was given the opportunity to go on a Cruise to the Caribbean. You would think she would be excited about this fabulous trip, however, that was not the case. All the food, parties, tropical cocktails and socializing by the pool and beach were too much for her. She would rather skip spending time with family and friends than put herself in harm's way of tempting tropical food and drink for a week.

It doesn't have to be that way. Denying yourself of food and drink on a daily basis is not a sensible eating strategy to stay healthy, lose weight and keep it off. Getting ready for a trip to the tropics should not mean going on a "diet" in preparation for your trip because eventually you have to "get off" the diet, much like the cruise ship.

Eating less food in order to find your "abs" for the trip is the last thing you want to do because your body will burn away muscle to maintain itself and survive. You will lose weight and body fat too but the minute you go off your "diet", you will start to put weight back on – the kind you do NOT want – FAT! When your body has gone into starvation mode, it stores fat for future use, just in case, you decide to "diet" again. This is the roller coaster ride so many embark on when they try to lose weight, often referred to as "yo-yo" dieting.

The goal is to lose body fat and keep the muscle which will allow you to keep the weight off for life, without feeling deprived or starved. I want you to feel healthy, strong and ready to take on your trip to the tropics. You can become a fat-burning machine instead of a fat-storing one.

Eating a complete meal of protein, fats and carbohydrates every 3 hours will support muscle and release body fat.

Blaze a new path to a healthy body with this combination at every meal:
  • 60% CARBOHYDRATES – leafy greens, spinach and other green vegetables, berries, oats, whole grains
  • 20% PROTEIN – turkey, chicken, fish, tuna, egg whites with one yolk, whey protein powder
  • 20% FAT – extra-virgin olive oil, nuts, seeds, avocado, peanut butter, almond butter

Get ready for your Caribbean Cruise with these delicious meals you can prepare easily at home. Every time you eat a meal, you will help your body lose weight and keep the muscle. Having the foods listed above on hand makes it easier to make a healthy meal any time of day so you will not skip meals or be tempted by sweets or junk food.
